Leading Change: Sewing Lessons for Empowerment

Robert Mariano, Assistant Commissioner of the Belize Police Department, is utilizing his tailoring skills to teach others how to sew.

The Belize Police Department is initiating different alternatives to crime with the hope of reducing misconduct. Robert Mariano is hoping that by passing along his skills that he earned when he was young that those he is teaching will be able to provide for themselves by creating their own clothing and possibly start their own businesses. The classes happen twice a week for 3 hours where individuals are taught how to cut, fold, and sew items such as hats, dresses and skirts. By the end of the program, those involved will receive a certificate of their achievement.
